Over the past decades, the processes of expansion of degraded areas, including those affected by desertification and drought, reduction in biodiversity of terrestrial ecosystems, decrease in the productivity of arable, pasture and forest lands, increase of dust and sand storms, long-term loss of organic carbon reserves and total soil fertility have become a universal global problem that affecting all countries of the world.
There is a need to strengthen and deepen constructive and joint cooperation within the framework of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and its global initiatives, in particular to achieve land degradation neutrality, to combat drought, to combat dust and sand storms and others, including measures to develop early warning monitoring systems, to assess and reduce vulnerabilities and risks, and to rehabilitate degraded land.
It is important to collaborate actively in preparation, formal process and activities of the Sixteenth Conference of the Parties to the UNCCD in Riyadh in December 2024, which is intended to be a landmark event to accelerate action to conserve the planet's land resources for future generations, strengthen sustainable land management practices and drought resilience, and transition to a green economy.
