Sustainable Development in the Arctic

Nature has no boundaries, so as we develop the Arctic region, it is important for us to remember to preserve the nature of the whole planet. The Arctic Council's new 2021-2030 Strategic Plan calls for sustainable, social, and economic development of the region that should be carried out with respect and care for the environment.
The Council calls for social and economic development, climate change mitigation and adaptation aimed at building low-emission communities and protecting the environment throughout the Arctic.
The approach to preserving the region must take into account the different interests of the states such as regulation of traffic speeds and noise, or seasonal special conditions. Everywhere, the traditions and knowledge of local residents must be taken into account, so that an interconnected network of areas with a special nature management regime can be created, and nature can be preserved without stopping the development. At the same time, it makes sense to do this throughout the entire Arctic.
It should be noted that in addition to the changes associated with human activity, the Arctic region is changing more than any other part of our planet due to the problems associated with the issue of climate change.
There is a need to focus on new scientific and policy themes relevant for the region that is on the forefront of climate change. This region is warming three times faster than the rest of the planet and rapidly changing from an environment of ice and snow to a greener, wetter and warmer system; that is why the climate risk to Arctic socio-ecological systems cannot be overemphasized.
We need sustainable economies and thriving communities in the Arctic region.
The discussion session will include the following questions:
- Impact of the Arctic region on the global economy development;
- Role and objectives of the Arctic Council. Chairmanship of the Russian Federation;
- Environmental and economic well-being of the Arctic as Russia’s strategic advantage;
- The role of humans in the Arctic;
- The Arctic as a key driver of long-term successful development of the Russian Federation.
